To Grade or Not to Grade? Understanding PSA, BGS, and CGC

If you have spent any time in the Pokémon TCG community, you have likely seen cards encased in thick plastic holders with a numeric grade at the top. These are “Graded Slabs,” and they represent the premium tier of the collecting hobby. But what exactly are they, and should you grade your cards?

What is Card Grading?

Third-party companies like PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), BGS (Beckett Grading Services), and CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) authenticate your card and assign it a condition grade from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint). The card is then sonically sealed in a tamper-proof plastic case, preserving its condition forever.

Why Buy Graded Cards?

• Guaranteed Authenticity: A slab removes all doubt. The card is real.
• Defined Condition: No more arguing over what constitutes “Near Mint.” A PSA 9 is a universally recognized standard.
• Value Appreciation: A card that grades a perfect 10 can be worth exponentially more than its “raw” ungraded counterpart due to the sheer difficulty of achieving that grade.

Should I Grade My Own Cards?

Grading takes time and money. If you have a highly sought-after, flawless alternate art card, sending it in for grading can be a great move. However, for binder collections or playing decks, keeping them “raw” is the way to go.
