Fake vs. Real: The Collector’s Guide to Authenticating Pokémon Cards

As the Pokémon TCG community continues to boom across India, so does the unfortunate influx of counterfeit cards. Nothing is worse than spending your hard-earned money on a beautiful “chase card,” only to realize it is a fake.

The Light Test

Take your smartphone flashlight and press it directly against the back of the card. A genuine Pokémon card is manufactured with a black graphite layer sandwiched between the paper to make it stiff. A real card will block almost all the light. Fakes are usually printed on cheap, thin paper and will let a lot of light shine completely through.

Texture and Holo Patterns

Modern “Ultra Rares” (like Alternate Arts, Secret Rares, and Full Arts) almost always have a distinct, fingerprint-like texture on the surface. Fakes are notoriously smooth and glossy. Additionally, counterfeiters often get the holographic shine wrong, making it look dull or washing out the artwork.

Font and Spelling Mistakes

Always check the HP font, attack descriptions, and spelling. Counterfeiters frequently use the wrong fonts, make obvious typos, or incorrectly size the energy symbols.
